Records of Concerned Residents of the Youghiogheny, 1968-2004.

The records in this collection include meeting minutes, facsimile transmissions, photocopies, correspondence, legal briefs, photographs, newspaper clippings, computer printouts, hand-written notes and forms, posters, and videotapes. Series II-V show how the individual members and the group as a whole operated in pursuing their mission: how they organized themselves, gathered and used information, collaborated and negotiated with other agencies, and faced challenges such as limited resources and opposing government and business interests. Series VI is an extensive collection of legal briefs and other records from the court cases pursued by CRY. Several subjects are represented in more than one series (for example, the closure plan prepared by Mill Service, Inc. for Impoundment #5 in Series II and IV), or in more than one file in the same series (for example, Grants and CHD Grants; By-Laws and CRY Core Files; Correspondence and Letters, in Series II). Published documents, including reports, legislative bills, and newsletters from CRY and other organizations, most notably Everyone's Backyard and Rachel's Hazardous Waste News, have been pulled from the collection and cataloged separately.

Following rather close on the heels of the unsuccessful 1966 campaign for U.S. Congress, yet another Thornburgh campaign got underway. Newly elected Pennsylvania Governor Raymond P. Shafer made constitutional reform a priority for his administration and voters were asked in the May 1967 primary to call a limited Constitutional Convention. Thornburgh's long standing interest in judicial reform and his then developing concerns about local government tempted him to run in his own Forty-third Distri...
